Understanding Medical Tests: Fluoroscopy and Cineradiography
Fluoroscopy and cineradiography are diagnostic tools used to examine spinal structures at rest and during:
- Movement (biomechanics)
- Musculoskeletal injury examination, such as whiplash
- Diagnostic procedures, such as discography or myelography
- Vertebroplasty treatment of vertebral compression fracture
- Spinal injection therapies
- Postoperative evaluation of spinal fusion
This technology combines conventional fluoroscopy, or x-ray, with video making capabilities. Images are recorded on tape and can be replayed in real time, slow motion, or one frame at a time (freeze frame).
Either test can reveal more about a musculoskeletal injury, such as whiplash, than a static or plain x-ray. For example, your doctor can view spinal structures, such as joints, ligaments, and discs moving together.
